Gentle Acupuncture Care for Children

A safe, gentle approach to supporting your child’s nervous system, digestion, sleep,
and emotional regulation.

At Trinity Acupuncture in Torrance, pediatric care is designed specifically for developing systems. Children are not small adults—their nervous, immune, and digestive systems are highly responsive and still maturing. Treatment is adapted to meet each child’s age, comfort level,
and individual needs.

Children are not simply small adults—their nervous, immune, and digestive systems are dynamic and highly responsive. At Trinity, our pediatric acupuncture program is designed to support healthy regulation and resilience through gentle, developmentally appropriate care.

Rather than focusing solely on symptoms, our approach addresses the underlying physiological patterns that support healthy growth, adaptation, and development. Families often seek care for concerns such as school-related stress, digestive issues, sleep challenges, immune support, eczema, headaches, and hormonal changes during growth and development.

We provide a calm, supportive environment where children feel safe and comfortable. Our pediatric services are available for infants, toddlers, school-age children, and adolescents.

Our approach is flexible, non-forceful, and built on trust. We meet each child where they are and adjust techniques accordingly.

Non-Insertive Shonishin

A specialized Japanese pediatric technique that uses gentle rhythmic stroking or tapping on the skin’s surface to stimulate acupuncture pathways. No needles are required, making it ideal for infants, toddlers, and sensitive children.

Pediatric Tui Na

A traditional Chinese pediatric massage used to stimulate and regulate the child’s meridian system. Treatment often involves quick repetitive strokes, gentle pulling techniques, and light tapping along specific channels. It is commonly used for infants and young children (typically up to around age three) and is often combined with acupressure.

Acupressure

Gentle manual pressure applied to specific acupuncture points to support regulation and healing without needles.

Pediatric Cupping

Very gentle cups may be used to release tension in the muscle layer or/ and to stimulate acupuncture pathways. Pediatric cupping is typically light and brief and is adjusted to the child’s age and sensitivity.

A gentle technique using a smooth tool to lightly stroke the skin and stimulate circulation along acupuncture pathways. In children, it is applied very lightly and briefly.

Ear Seeds (Auricular Therapy)

Small seeds placed on specific points on the outer ear using gentle adhesive. They provide mild stimulation between visits and are often used to support focus, stress regulation, and sleep, particularly in older children and teens.

Therapeutic Magnets

Small medical magnets may be placed on acupuncture points using gentle adhesive to provide mild, continuous stimulation. This completely non-needle technique is well tolerated by children and can help support regulation between treatments.

Press Tags (Micro-Needle Stickers)

Tiny sterile acupuncture needles attached to small adhesive patches are placed on specific points so children can move comfortably during treatment. These are extremely gentle and designed to be comfortable and virtually painless.

Pediatric Taps/ Quick Needling

For children who are comfortable with needles, we may use very fine pediatric needles that are inserted and removed almost instantly.

Adolescent Care

For teens, treatment can gradually transition toward traditional acupuncture to support sports injuries, hormonal changes, stress, and the physical and emotional demands of adolescence.

Nutrition & Herbal Support

When appropriate, we may provide nutrition guidance and herbal recommendations to support digestion, immunity, and overall regulation in a way that is appropriate for the child’s age and development.

Parent Education & Home Support

When helpful, we may teach parents simple techniques—such as acupressure or pediatric massage—that can be safely continued at home to reinforce treatment and support the child’s ongoing regulation and well-being.

Children often respond quickly to acupuncture due to their adaptable nervous systems. We commonly support families in Torrance with:

  • Anxiety, emotional regulation, and school-related stress
  • Sleep issues including difficulty falling asleep and night waking
  • Focus and attention concerns, including ADHD-related restlessness
  • Digestive issues such as constipation and stomach discomfort
  • Immune support for frequent colds, allergies, and respiratory concerns
  • Headaches, tics, and sports-related muscle pain

Because a child’s nervous system is highly adaptable, children often respond quickly to gentle treatment. Our local families in Torrance and the South Bay often seek pediatric acupuncture for:

Emotional Regulation

Anxiety, school-related stress, irritability, emotional overwhelm, sensory sensitivity, OCD tendencies, sensory processing challenges, and difficulty regulating big feelings.

Sleep & Focus

Difficulty falling asleep, restless sleep, night terrors, frequent waking, focus challenges including ADHD-related restlessness, and bedwetting (nocturnal enuresis).

Digestive Health

Chronic constipation, reflux, bloating, frequent stomach aches, stress-related stomachaches, nausea, motion sensitivity, and irregular digestion.

Immune Resilience

Frequent colds, seasonal allergies, sinus congestion, asthma support, recurrent ear infections, chronic cough, post-viral cough, and recurring respiratory infections.

Skin & Inflammatory Conditions

Eczema, rashes, hives, and inflammatory skin concerns.

Neurological Support

Tics, Tourette’s syndrome, supportive care for children with cerebral palsy, headaches, migraines, nervous system regulation, autism spectrum support, and sensory processing or neurodivergent regulation.

Physical Pain & Movement

Growing pains, sports injuries, muscle strains in young athletes, teeth grinding (bruxism), and jaw tension.

Hormonal & Developmental Changes

Puberty support, menstrual irregularities, PMS symptoms in teens, and hormonal shifts during adolescence.

Many childhood concerns are linked to nervous system imbalance. When a child’s body is in a constant “fight or flight” state, it can affect sleep, digestion, and emotional regulation.

Acupuncture helps shift the body into a “rest and digest” state, supporting:

  • Calmer emotional responses
  • Improved sleep patterns
  • Better digestion and gut function
  • Stronger immune resilience

At Trinity Acupuncture in Torrance, pediatric care is focused on creating a safe, calm environment where children can regulate, recover, and grow. Treatment is designed to support long-term resilience, not just short-term symptom relief.

For families in Torrance and the South Bay seeking a natural, physiology-based approach to children’s health, pediatric acupuncture offers a thoughtful and effective option.

Pediatric treatments are typically shorter than adult sessions and are always adapted to the child’s age, comfort level, and developmental stage. Many treatments involve gentle techniques such as pediatric massage, acupressure, or non-needle methods. When needles are used, they are extremely fine and often inserted very briefly. Pediatric visits are typically brief, often lasting around 20-30 minutes depending on the child’s age, needs, and consultation.

Parents remain present during the visit, and children are never forced into treatment. Our goal is to create a calm, supportive environment where children feel safe and comfortable.

Depending on the child’s needs, visits may also include guidance on nutrition, gentle herbal support, and simple techniques parents can safely use at home to help reinforce treatment and support ongoing regulation.

We are honored to support our local families throughout Torrance and the South Bay. If you would like to learn whether pediatric acupuncture may help your child, we invite you to schedule a consultation with our clinic.

Is acupuncture safe for children?

Yes. Pediatric acupuncture is very safe when performed by a licensed practitioner. Techniques are gentle and adapted to the child’s comfort level.

Does pediatric acupuncture use needles?

Not always. Many treatments use non-insertive techniques like Shonishin or acupressure. When needles are used, they are extremely fine and applied briefly.

What conditions can pediatric acupuncture treat?

Common concerns include anxiety, sleep issues, digestive problems, immune support, and mild pain conditions.

How many sessions does a child need?

Children often respond quickly. Some notice changes within a few sessions, though ongoing care may be recommended for chronic concerns.

Will my child be comfortable during treatment?

Yes. Treatment is never forced. We work at your child’s pace to ensure a calm and positive experience.

Neuroplasticity & Development

Children’s nervous systems are highly adaptable. Gentle stimulation of acupuncture points can support new, healthier patterns of regulation.

Autonomic Nervous System Regulation

Acupuncture may influence vagal tone, supporting improved heart rate variability and reduced stress responses in children.

The Gut-Brain Axis

Treatment can support communication between the digestive system and brain, helping regulate gut motility and reduce functional abdominal discomfort.

Immune System Modulation

Acupuncture may help balance immune responses, particularly in children with allergies or frequent illness.

Safety & Efficacy

Research in pediatric populations supports acupuncture as a low-risk intervention when performed by licensed practitioners. Because children’s systems are still developing, gentle treatment can lead to meaningful and lasting improvements.
